Starter:

Watch the Connotation-Denotation video.

The first time we will just watch it.
The second time, write down the words that you hear in the video.
The third time, get together with a partner and discuss your observations.

Use this time to share lyrics and interpretations.

2.  Connotation vs. Denotation

Make a copy of the Connotation/ Denotation worksheet in your folder. 
Individually, fill out the chart using the words and phrases prescribed to you.

We will share these as a class and discuss their meanings.

3.  Song Practice

Take out the five songs that you used for homework last night. 
Identify at least 3 examples of connotation and denotation in each.
You may create big charts using the poster paper, or you may fill it out in this chart in Google Docs.
Closure:

Using the learning target, self-evaluate on identifying motifs.
Would you be hitting a 1, 2, 3, or 4?
Explain why you are on that level.

Repeat the above steps for assessing understanding of connotation and denotation.

As a class, we will listen to the audiobook of Story of an Hour.

4.  Practice and Homework

You will practice identifying motifs through song lyrics.
Find any five songs of your choice and identify a motif in each one.
In a Google Doc, identify the motif and explain how it creates meaning in the song.
